Native Wetland Plant Recovery Following Herbicide Treatment of Phragmites australis

Dense patches of Phragmites australis in Lake Erie coastal wetlands were treated with a glyphosate-based herbicide as part of a pilot project in 2016. While secondary invasive species dominated the wetlands shortly after application took place, native species have now returned. However, with Lake Erie water levels beginning to drop, and viable Phragmites australis seeds still present in the wetland, the key to determining what vegetation communities will return in upcoming years is to examine the wetland seedbank
