Common Buckthorn or European Buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica) is a small invasive tree that displaces native plants, creates dense thickets and alters soil conditions. In this two-hour session, participants will learn about this invasive plant (biology and life cycle, pathways of spread, impacts, key identification features and lookalikes) as well as the latest information on control methods recommended by professionals across Ontario.
The same workshop will be repeated on two dates, on April 13th and April 27th. For both dates, Iola Price, Director-at-Large at the Ontario Invasive Plant Council, will present a case study demonstrating a long-term buckthorn removal project at McKay Lake in Ottawa, ON.
Participants will also engage in an interactive activity to test their understanding of how to identify buckthorn and differentiate this species from common look-alikes.
